exchange 2010 is running on e drive installed from c drive on server 2008, c drive almost out of space. I am thinking of ghosting the harddrive onto a much bigger hard drive, all the settings should come over? its one disk with two partitions c and e. there is an option to strink e. I am thinking take a image of c and e and put it on larger hardrive, that should work right?

Hi, Is it a possibility to just add another disk and then move some files from the C-drive to the new disk? A ghosting could work, but to minimize downtime you could create a new server with Exchange 2010 and then just move mailboxes, this of course means that you have to have additional hardware or a vmware/hyper-v setup running where you could create the new server on. How large is the C-drive on your system? /MartinExchange is a passion not just a collaboration software.

c drive is 40 gigs, I know small, before I came on board. create new server what about the other servers pointing to the exchange wouldnt that cause some kind of conflict with the edge server and transport server? how about license? sounds like a lot of configuration that may not work the way it should, with the ghost it will have the same setting just a different hard drive. What else do you guys recommend?

Hi, 40 GB is a bit small, but not that bad, I use 50 GB as standard on servers still and that is quite enough so far. I haven't tried ghosting a server, but in theory it should work just fine. The suggestion I made before with an extra server might seem a bit hard work, but it is actually a quite simple task. If you are using an edge transport you will need to make a subscription to this from the new server, but other than that it should fit right in the organization and be a simple task. /MartinExchange is a passion not just a collaboration software.

Short term fix: clear out your temp folder and make your page file smaller. Long term fix: use a bigger boot drive. Ghost? Geez, I haven't heard that term in forever. Sounds like DAS where you partitioned the drive as C: and E:. Well that presents a problem, as does DAS in general, but I digress. If you shrink E:, it still starts in the same location which in turn limits your ability to grow C:. I think your best option in this case (the DAS case thats is; if you'd gone SAN you'd have a lot more options) is to use third party tools to muck around with your partitions. A quick Bing search for "resize partition" should give you a good idea of what's available. J

J I did a search before I posted here, one way I look at the site is for brain storming, not saying going the ghost option, the page file strinking or moving will just reduce space on the e drive where exchange is installed. there is a vm ware tools instanled but I do not see where the server is running. all this setup before my time and I am now playing catchup.
